Quotation two
Quote #2
“When we are shown scenes of starving children in Africa, with a call for us to do something to help them, the underlying ideological message is something like: "Don't think, don't politicize, forget about the true causes of their poverty, just act, contribute money, so that you will not have to think!”
- Slavoj Žižek
This quote is almost a slam against foundations that help children in developing countries. It is very true though, people donate to say 'I helped feed a child in africa' but really they just send a dollar a day and you don't know where it goes. you don't go and visit the children you help you never physically meet them, but you feel like you have made a huge difference. Don't get me wrong these organisations are saving children who are starving but you don't have to think twice about them. The young children in developing countries cant do anything to save themselves, they didn't ask for this life they were born into it.
Zizek is a philosopher and cultural critic, he teaches at a european graduate school. He is obviously a very well educated man which makes his agrument much more valid in my eyes. This quote is quite negative but it shows how people think and act towards the hunger promblem in developing countries...
